Coulthard about Verstappen: 'He dominates, but it's incredibly close'

Former Formula One driver David Coulthard sees Max Verstappen taking the record number of wins in a row at Monza. The Scot is full of admiration for the Dutchman's season so far and, in On Track GP's podcast, shines his light on the possible new record and Verstappen's season so far.

Does Verstappen break the record at Monza?

Max Verstappen took his ninth win in a row at Zandvoort, equalling Sebastian Vettel's record. The German did the same trick in 2013, also in a Red Bull car. If the Dutchman manages to win the race at Monza this coming weekend, he will definitely take over the record. Former driver Coulthard can really only think of one reason that could stand in Verstappen's way during his record hunt. Asked if the Scot thinks Verstappen will set a new record on Sunday, he replied:"Yes, absolutely. He’s got an unbelievable potential to do that. But as you know, racing is racing and anything can happen. But it doesn’t look like the week between the races something major is going to change."

Coulthard also looks at the remaining races after Monza and really only sees teammate Sergio Perez as a possible opponent for Verstappen. "He can absolutely [win remaining eight races]. Now his teammate seems to be a little bit off the boil, that really accelerates his potential. But for Checo, he is obviously certain to rediscover his mojo, for whatever reason he’s kind of struggled recently," Coulthard said.

Finally, the former McLaren and Red Bull driver also looks back on the season so far. He sees Verstappen dominating especially in the championship standings, but he points out that not everything is as easy as it seems. "But what I find fascinating this year, although Max has been all dominantly winning the championship, there’s been a lot of races where it’s been incredibly close in terms of lap time," Coulthard concluded.
