'Perez's contract may be adjusted due to points deficit to Verstappen'
Sergio Perez is currently 125 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen. Not only is that bad news for the Mexican in the Formula 1 championship standings, but according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, it could also affect his contract with Red Bull Racing.
'Perez's contract could be adjusted'
The newspaper reports that there is a clause in Perez's contract stating that the deal can be adjusted based on his performance. To be more precise, if he is 125 points or more behind team-mate Verstappen, Red Bull is said to have this option.
Since Verstappen's lead is currently exactly 125 points, the clause could be activated. The duration of the contract, which runs until the end of 2024, is unlikely to be shortened. However, there could be financial implications for the six-time Grand Prix winner.
For instance, Red Bull could choose to downgrade Perez's salary or make performance bonuses less lucrative. The Austrian racing team itself does not want to say anything about the content of its drivers' contracts.
