Madrid Grand Prix closer than ever: 'We are going to sign'

A Grand Prix in Madrid is closer than ever, confirms events institution IFEMA, which is to become (partly) the setting for the new Formula 1 race in the Spanish capital.

Formula 1, if the ink is on paper, will race on the streets surrounding the IFEMA events fair in the Spanish capital. A possible new Spanish Grand Prix had been on the cards for some time. The deal now seems to have been finalised after all, informs José Vicente de los Mozos, president of events at IFEMA: "I know when we are going to sign the deal because we are going to sign it," the Spaniard cryptically told Europapress.

Two Spanish Grands Prix?

It is not yet entirely clear whether the arrival of the Madrid Grand Prix would also mean a definitive end to the races in Catalonia. It is illogical that two Grands Prix will be run in Spain in one season, but a possible collaboration between the two venues is not yet off the table. This would allow both organisations to host a race every other year.

"If in the end there will be two races in Spain, I am happy, but I am the representative of Madrid," De los Mozos informed. The Barcelona circuit still has a contract until 2026. Little is known about the terms of the Madrid Grand Prix.
