For a while it looked like it was going to be between Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, but in the end Verstappen again 'just' drove more than a second away from the rest of the Formula 1 field. Verstappen explains where the key lies to getting that one perfect lap in treacherous conditions like Saturday's in Montreal.

Like this year, the 2022 F1 season also saw a rained-out qualifying session. Back then, Verstappen and Alonso were next to each other on the front row of the grid, now they are separated by Nico Hulkenberg, who captured the second spot in very surprising fashion. But what does it take to set that perfect lap in such conditions?

Verstappen on key to fast lap in rain

"I think in general it only helps if you are confident in the wet. It's a lot of feeling as well, knowing how to drive it, what lines to take. It's difficult to fully explain you know why that happens, but it's something that you have been learning since you are little kids," the Dutchman said during the press conference.

He continued: "I remember back in the gokart days, my dad was literally standing on the track telling me where to drive in the wet, because I think he, back in the day, was also quite decent in the wet. So yes, just learning and hoping to understand what is going on and what you have to do, how to drive fast in the wet."
