Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is gearing up for the Canadian Grand Prix. Last year, the Spaniard fared well in Montreal, where he finished second behind race winner Max Verstappen, but there were chances for victory. Speaking to AS, the one-time race winner discusses the chances for Ferrari.

The fact that the Italian racing stable can build a fast car is obvious. Very recently, the Italians won one of the most prestigious motorsport races in the world: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sainz has to laugh when confronted with the fact that the most successful Ferrari car was not built for Formula 1. How can that be? "That's a trick question. It's a completely different class with different rules. The big difference is that Red Bull has done very well in F1, and Aston Martin, Mercedes and ourselves are a step behind," says the man from Madrid honestly.

Nevertheless, he is extremely proud of his team's performance at the Le Mans. "This is spectacular. I gave Antonio Giovinazzi (one of the winning drivers) a big hug. To achieve this after so many years with Ferrari is special."

'Red Bull must go'

But the team wants more. After all, the last time Ferrari won a championship in Formula 1 dates back to 2008 (constructors). A year ago, the prancing horse was close to victory in Canada. Carlos Sainz was on Verstappen's tail and even had more speed, but he did not get past the world champion, who defended hard. How can Ferrari get into that situation again, being faster than Verstappen? "First of all, Red Bull has to go!" the Spaniard laughed. "Then it should be possible. One weekend we are fastest, and then it's Mercedes or Aston Martin." He finds it hard to settle for a possible second place. "That is not our goal. We want to finish first. That's why I'm also more than ever in Maranello, in the simulator, to help the team move in the right direction."
