Fernando Alonso has finished in P7 in his home Grand Prix, behind his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll, but he told his team he would not attack him in the dying laps of the race. Still, today the Spaniard was not as far up as he has been so far this season.

Following the race, the former two-time champion said it was not an easy weekend for his team and had to put in a lot of work, but it seemed like they were on the right track. “I don't know. I think a little bit of both (upgrades from other teams and track conditions). The track was a little bit not the best for us. From FP1 we were on a completely different setup than what we predicted. So we had to work a lot during the weekend to be happy with the car, which was kind of new for us. We were always happy from FP1. While here we had to work a little bit more,” he told GPblog among others.

'Maybe they are a little bit stronger'

The Spaniard continued on how challenging this race was, and how Aston Martin was not in contention today with the Red Bulls and the two Mercedes.

“The problem was not that we were unlucky or different strategies or anything like that. I think we were slow compared to Mercedes. Slow on the soft, slow on the hard. We just concentrated on the Alpines, AlphaTauris and kept up the pace with the Ferraris.”

He is now looking forward to the next race in Canada where he started from the front row last year, while he also acknowledged the new upgrades Aston Martin’s rivals brough to this weekend.

“And then the upgrades from the other people. I think maybe they didn't show the full potential in Monaco, Miami, the street circuits. So here we saw today that maybe they are a little bit stronger. But I'm not worried. It's going to be better weekends and worse weekends. We will have our opportunity in Canada.”

“I think in two weeks' time we will see a completely different picture. Hopefully, we fight with the Red Bulls soon,” the driver who is currently in P3 in the Drivers’ Standings added.
