Rinus van Kalmthout has secured second position for the Indy 500. The Dutchman reached the Fast Six in third and drove an average speed of 234.211 mph in the all-deciding run over four laps. Alex Palou will start from pole position at Indianapolis next Sunday.

The best six drivers took turns to start to complete four laps as fast as possible. The average speed over the four laps determined the starting spot. Patricio O'Ward came in first during the Fast Six, but failed to meet his average from the Fast Twelve. The McLaren Mexican reached an average speed of 233.158 mph.

After O'Ward, it was Scott Dixon's turn and he started faster, but lost ground during his laps. The New Zealand driver drove a 233.151, forcing him to sit behind O'Ward. Alex Palou then briefly showed why he is at the top of the IndyCar championship. In the first two laps, Palou hit his stride with even a 235.131 in the first lap. He averaged 234.217, over a mile per hour faster than the men in front of him and a pole record in Indianapolis.

Veekay's turn

After Palou, it was Rinus van Kalmthout's turn. In his fourth participation in the Indy 500, he was once again in the Fast Six. A particularly handsome performance, but the man born in Hoofddorp obviously wanted more. With a 235.019, Rinus came close to Palou on the first lap and was even faster than the 2021 IndyCar champion on the second lap. With a 233.982, Veekay stayed close to Palou, so everything came down to the last lap. With 2.33.444, Van Kalmthout fell just short, as this brought his average to 234.211, 0.006 slower than Palou.

After these two guns, it was the turn of the two fastest of the Fast Twelve. Santino Ferrucci did not match the times of Palou and Veekay. The American drove an average of 233.661 miles per hour. Last to enter the track was Felix Rosenqvist. The Swede drove a very flat run, but with a 234.114 miles per hour, he had to settle for P3.
