Max Verstappen was fastest on the first day of the Grand Prix weekend in Miami. Apart from a minor problem with his headrest, the second free practice session on the hot street circuit went according to plan. At the end of the day, the reigning champion was more than four tenths than his teammate at Red Bull Racing, Sergio Perez.

During free practice, Verstappen complained about his headrest. Team boss Horner indicated to Sky Sports that there had since been contact with the FIA, and a structural solution to the inconvenience would be put in place on Saturday. Verstappen himself did not mention the headrest afterwards to the same English channel.

Getting used to it a bit

He said: "It was a good day. Initially, it was about getting used to the track a bit with the new tarmac, ramping up a lot throughout the day. Always felt good in the car, we have good balance. It's still slippery off line, the driving line it's okay. As soon as you go off line, it's a lot less grip. But it's the same for everyone."

Verstappen said it was important that there was good balance in the car straight away on Friday. "Most importantly today we had a good balance with the car to start with so I'm happy. Still a few little things we want to look at. Ideally you want to be fast at every single corner but that's not always possible. We also have to see what the weather will do. It's the same for everyone, everytime we were out there on the high fuel we also had a good balance."
