Logan Sargeant has looked back on his failed qualifying for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix with some frustration. After his fast time was disallowed, the Williams driver was unable to set a new time, meaning he will start from 20th place.

Sargeant had the makings of a fine result in qualifying. His time of 1:29:7 would have been enough to reach Q2, had it not been for the time being taken away because Sargeant crossed the pit lane line. The reprimand still caused some confusion as race officials somewhat clumsily indicated that Sargeant had gone off-track at turn 27, even though that is impossible at that turn.

The rule was clearly stated in advance in the FIA's documentation, and Sargeant therefore took the blame on himself for making the mistake, although he would have liked there to have been a bit more attention to this rule in the practice sessions. " I do think we need to make this clearer during practice sessions ," Sargeant told several media outlets after qualifying. "It should give us a frame of reference. I did pretty much the same thing I did all weekend, only now my time was taken away. That's pretty frustrating."

Sargeant may 'just' take part in the race

Since Sargeant had not set a new fast lap, only his slow outlap counted. This puts Sargeant outside the rule that states you must be at least within 107 per cent of the fastest time in Q1 to be allowed to enter the race at all. However, in a document disclosed that based on Sargeant's performance during practice, it has been decided to allow him to simply enter the race.
