Ferrari, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport made great strides in engine performance. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are said to have as much as 30bhp more with their cars this calendar year, while the figure is significantly lower with the competition.

Because of the engine freeze, teams are not allowed to make any major modifications to the powerunit in the coming years. However, the regulations do allow formations to work on reliability. And in this, Ferrari has made the biggest strides.

Last season, it came to light that the Ferrari engine was not yet completely reliable, but some adjustments would meanwhile make it so. The formation reportedly managed to find an extra thirty hp behind the scenes, with which it hopes to catch up with the competition.

Ferrari makes leap towards Mercedes and Red Bull

Indeed, for Mercedes and Red Bull, progress would be a lot less. Mercedes has recently been working on bringing down mechanical component friction and in doing so found sixteen hp, which is almost half as much as Ferrari. Red Bull focused on pumping the engine, yielding ten hp.
