Marko sees Ferrari weakened by Vasseur's arrival: ''I rate Binotto''

Helmut Marko has watched with amazement the departure of Mattia Binotto at Ferrari. Little will change at Red Bull Racing, but Marko is critical of AlphaTauri's performance.

Following the death of Dietrich Mateschitz, Red Bull's leadership has fallen to Oliver Mintzlaff. Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri have been two key signposts of the energy drink brand under Mateschitz's leadership and this will not change under the new boss, according to Marko.

Pressure on AlphaTauri

''With us everything stays calm. Initial talks have been held with our new boss, Mr. Mintzlaff, and everyone agrees that it wouldn't make sense to rebuild a successful package like Red Bull Racing. Where there is a need, there is Alpha Tauri. This was not satisfactory in the past year,'' Marko said to Auto, Motor und Sport.

Asked if a new boss would not want to throw its own sauce over the company, Marko makes it clear that Mintzlaff has expressed his intention to continue Mateschitz's line. That is different at rival Ferrari, where a new team boss will be at the helm from 2023. Marko has watched that with amazement.

Ferrari weakened

''In the case of Ferrari, I don't quite understand the change. I rate Binotto as an excellent technician and politician. He was simply overwhelmed by the task. But it would have been enough to provide him with a sports director who would support him on the track and with strategy. With the new man, who has many other jobs, I see a weakening for Ferrari.''

For Red Bull Racing, that would make the fight for the world championship even easier if the 2022 number two weakens. Marko therefore rates Mercedes higher in the battle for the 2023 title. The question is whether the team of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton can build a car good enough to compete for victory at all circuits next season.
