Ulrich Fitz, Mercedes DTM boss, has spoken about a wild-card entry for Jenson Button next month.

Jenson Button retired from Formula One back in 2017, but there is speculation of a return to motorsport for the former world champion.

"Jenson is a good idea," Fritz admitted to TouringCarTimes in Zandvoort this weekend.

"After all, he was a Formula One champion with a Mercedes engine!"

Button won the world championship with Brawn GP - which was later on bought by Mercedes.

The 38-year-old also competed in Le Mans last month and is also entering this year's Japanese Super Formula.

Mercedes are keen to bring the retired world champion into their team for the Brands Hatch round of the DTM season.

"Lewis Hamilton would definitely not be an option," Fritz said.

"He's focussed on his current programme in Formula One.

"He would also be on holiday at the time of the Brands Hatch event.

"It's too early yet to confirm who will be our wild card entry this season.

"There are various possibilities and we will make an announcement when we are ready.

"We won't comment on the circulating rumours (but) we definitely are not considering Fernando Alonso!"
