Ferrari: Rules prevented Red Bull from getting this penalty from FIA

The most discussed topic in Formula 1 last week was undoubtedly the soap opera surrounding the budget cap between Red Bull Racing and the FIA. Both parties reached a settlement between the United States and Mexico Grand Prix, but the competition is not happy with the level of punishment. Ferrari is perhaps the most outspoken racing stable.

Mercedes and Alfa Romeo Racing let it be known that they believe the penalty is not too bad, McLaren does not even agree with the settlement at all. Otmar Szafnauer (Alpine) thinks the penalty is appropriate, something Laurent Mekies does not understand at all. According to Ferrari's sporting director, the seven million fine and a ten per cent wind tunnel editorial is not nearly enough.

Ferrari dissatisfied

"We certainly feel it is low. We don't see it on the same scale as being able to compensate the overspend that was done." Mekies interjects. Ideally, Ferrari would have liked the FIA to have deducted several million from Red Bull's 2023 budget cap, but this proved impossible within the ABA (Accepted Breach Agreement) rules.

The Ferrari chief tells that in the team bosses' press conference According to Mekies, the rules need to be changed so that this is possible from this season (the 2022 financial year, ed.) onwards. "This is unfortunately one of the weaknesses of the regulations that they have written, and yes, I think it probably needs to be reviewed in the future."
