Official | Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps retained for 2023
- GPblog.com
In recent weeks we all feared for the future of the Belgian Grand Prix, but now it has become clear that the race at Spa-Francorchamps will remain on the calendar at least until 2023. Formula 1 has just announced this news through its own channels.
One extra year at Spa
The plan was to replace the Belgian GP for a Grand Prix weekend in South Africa. The Kyalami circuit was to be the first venue for Formula 1 since 1993, but the deal seems to be off the table. However, the plan is still to move the pinnacle of motorsport to South Africa in 2024.
On Sunday just before the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, it was announced that the race will return to Spa-Francorchamps in 2023. It is currently about a one-year extension of the current contract. Next year the Formula 1 and the circuit will sit down again for a possible extension of the contract for the coming years.
Change of date
Traditionally, the Belgian Grand Prix was held as the first race after the summer break, but this looks set to change next year. In all likelihood, the race will be moved to a date in July. The full calendar will be announced at a later date.
I am very pleased that the #BelgianGP will be on the calendar proposed to the World Motor Sport Council by FOM for 2023. Spa-Francorchamps is an iconic circuit and a special place for @F1#F1 @circuitspa https://t.co/bfWBPzwjOR
