Juan Pablo Montoya finds it difficult to predict how Fernando Alonso will fare at Aston Martin. He says that the results achieved so far say nothing about the future of the team and that he believes it is a great opportunity for the two-time world champion.

Currently the Spaniard is still driving for Alpine, but from next season he will drive for the Aston Martin team for at least two years as the replacement for Sebastian Vettel, who announced his retirement. The British team is said to have attracted Alonso with a good plan and a nice vision for the future.

Good gamble

The Colombian is asked by Vegasinsider if Alonso's switch is a good idea: "It is hard, but remember, with F1, if they run bad this year, it doesn’t mean they are going to run bad the next two years." He therefore expects a multi-year contract to definitely be in place as it was a key point for Alonso to leave Alpine. He indicates that the French team was so keen on Piastri that they only wanted to offer Fernando a one-year contract. Montoya therefore calls it a good gamble of the Spaniard.

Long term

Montoya continued: “You know, Mercedes always had good engines, and Aston has had decent cars. If they can put it all together, you know, they have the means and the budget, and everything to get it done.”  He therefore thinks Aston Martin has a chance to win in the long term and Fernando thinks he can pull it off. The former driver concludes, "I think it's a great opportunity."
