Fernando Alonso has often made the wrong choice in his Formula 1 career by switching teams at the wrong time. Given the current performance of Aston Martin, many people assume that this will be the case again, but is it right?

Will Alonso make the right choice this time?

Nobody could have foreseen that Alonso would make the switch to Aston Martin. With the departure of Sebastian Vettel a seat became available at the team, and soon the Spaniard was announced as the replacement for the four-time world champion.

Lawrence Stroll has a clear goal with Aston Martin: to achieve victories and championships. The Canadian has invested heavily in Aston Martin with modern facilities at Silverstone and the acquisition of talent from other teams. Stroll has now managed to convince two of the best drivers on the grid of Aston Martin's ambitions, and that will not be for nothing.

Alonso gets more security at Aston Martin

Alonso's place at Alpine has long seemed uncertain with the confirmed contract of Esteban Ocon and the possible arrival of Oscar Piastri. At Aston Martin, Alonso can secure a permanent place in Formula 1 because, as the team has no training programme for young drivers, there is no one waiting in line. In addition, Alonso now becomes the big star of an iconic car brand, whereas Alpine has fallen more into the background since its name change.

It may seem as if Alonso is taking a big step backwards, as Alpine consistently fights for points in the midfield, while Aston Martin often drives at the back of the field. Yet Alpine has also failed to deliver on its promises so far. After a fifth place in the constructors' championship in 2021, the team is again fighting for fourth place against McLaren this season. The team has been consistent, but Alpine has yet to make any real strides towards the top teams. Alonso seems to be convinced by Stroll's ambitious plans, and who knows, maybe together they can make it happen in the coming years.
