Perez criticises stewards' inconsistency after heavy grid penalty

Sergio Perez is unhappy with the inconsistency of the stewards at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mexican received a heavy grid penalty after qualifying and had to recover during the sprint race. However, Perez believes several drivers may have deserved a grid penalty.

Perez qualified fourth on Friday, but the FIA announced an investigation after the session for allegedly violating track limits. The Mexican's lap time was deleted, meaning Perez should not have been in Q3. As a result, he was dropped to 13th place.

The Red Bull driver recovered well in the sprint race and will start from the third row of the grid in the main race. Speaking to Sky Sports, Perez says he thought the penalty was correct, but he was still not happy. "I certainly was off the track, so that was correct. But what I found very wrong was they don’t quite have the system to be policing these kind of track limits and some people get away with it, some people not."

Perez balks at risk taken

"I got caught with it. But then the difficulty with it is we only found out after Q3 after we took all the risk, after we put [on] all the two sets of tyres. So the penalty was even harsher, but it’s what it is. This time it was me, but later on can be someone else", Perez continues.

Perez thinks something could possibly be done better, as some drivers do get away with it. According to the Mexican, several drivers would have deserved a penalty if the FIA had looked at all the onboards from Q2 and Q3.
