Ahead of the race weekend in Montreal, the FIA announced that they are going to implement measures around limiting the bouncing of the 2022 cars. The so-called porpoising didn't seem like a big problem until the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. There, Lewis Hamilton suffered so much back pain that the FIA decided to intervene.

They will do that by means of sensors that have to measure how much the car bounces up. They then want to set a maximum amount, so that the teams are obliged to counteract the porpoising. However, the teams are hesitant about the FIA's proposal because, although they themselves recognize that something needs to be done, they see problems in handling the rules.

Disqualification unlikely

Those concerns are shared by Christian Horner and Toto Wolff, team bosses of Red Bull Racing and Mercedes. Both let to Autosport Both let it be known that there is still a lot of consultation to be done before serious scrutiny will take place. In Canada, the FIA is still mainly concerned with collecting data in order to find a suitable amount in which the cars can bounce around.

According to Horner and Wolff, it is also important to keep a short line with the FIA. "Measuring frequencies can lead to very controversial situations. Would you disqualify a car because it bounces just too much? I doubt they would do that." In any case, the FIA wants to do something about porpoising, to ensure drivers' safety and to prevent possible injuries and accidents.
