Christian Horner is proud of Red Bull Racing's top form this season. The Austrian team has so far proven to break the dominant period of Mercedes. In the conversation with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the team boss further talks about the budgetcap, the Red Bull Junior program and the battle with Ferrari.

Horner began to tell La Gazzetta dello Sport:"It is true (that Red Bull is proud to have broken Mercedes' winning streak), because we were forced to fight with Mercedes until the end of 2021 without being able to focus on the 2022 car. The team's work to stay at the top has been excellent. The results are above expectations, but the question now is whether we can maintain this level with the developments."

Red Bull Powertrains

Red Bull Racing is still busy with the developments of Red Bull Powertrains, its own engine department. Asked about its long-term plans, Horner reveals that he sees it as an evolution of the energy drinks company. For example, they designed the Valkyrie supercar and there are other projects in the automotive world. "Our Technology Campus is looking at many things, such as the collaboration with Alinghi in the America's Cup. But the focus will always be on F1."

The British team boss says that the 2022 cars have made for entertaining and interesting racing so far, and that the drivers are clearly closer together. Exactly what F1 had in mind when introducing the new technical regulations. Horner is also very satisfied with how Stefano Domenicali is running the F1 organization:"He's doing a great job, he understands both the sport and the business. And the results are visible."

Budget Cap

Red Bull Racing would be on par with Ferrari in terms of the budget cap. Asked about the possible risk that teams may face, Horner says:"It's complicated to keep costs within the limits of the regulations, just think of the increase in raw material prices, but they are variables that are out of our control. It's a force majeure scenario. I think the FIA has to intervene to prevent every team from ending up in an investigation next year. "

The Austrian team has raised many good drivers with its Junior program, including Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Nevertheless, Red Bull has chosen to change course now that both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have been linked to the team for a longer term. Horner says the goal is to have as strong a team as possible. He continues: "If that doesn't happen, there is no problem to look around further, as we did with Perez."

Best chance

Sergio Perez has proven that the contract extension at Red Bull Racing was a good choice with his second place in the World Championship standings. Horner indicates that the goal is to beat Ferrari. "It is not important with which driver, it is important to give Max and Checo the best chance to do it," the team boss concludes.
