Max Verstappen took a strong stand against the possible salary cap of the drivers at the press conference on Friday. The Dutchman believes that the drivers take so much risk that they can earn a lot of money. Toto Wolff looks at it differently, he told De Telegraaf.

The Mercedes team boss can well understand that the drivers are speaking out about the possible plan, but at the same time he feels that the current amounts being spent are ultimately unaffordable. Therefore, he thinks it would be wise if the FIA chooses to impose a cap on the teams.

"I understand the opinion of drivers, but as a sport we also have to look at future and sustainability. Although there is no immediate solution," Wolff stated in conversation with journalist Erik van Haren. "Not only salary of drivers, but also of team bosses and top management should fall under budget cap. Drivers are the superstars, so it's logical that they earn the most."

Top teams fight to increase budget cap

Behind the scenes, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes are trying hard to increase this season's budget cap. According to the teams, the rising costs make it impossible to stay below the agreed amount. Other teams, however, are against this.
