After the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari' s main concern was the questionable call to bring Charles Leclerc into the pits. Jan Lammers takes on Xavier Marcos Padros, Leclerc's race engineer.

Problematic pit stop by Leclerc

During the pit stop from rain tires to intermediates, Leclerc had to wait briefly for teammate Carlos Sainz, who entered the pits just ahead of him. On the Monegasque's on-board radio, it could be heard, "Box, box, stay out, stay out! But that was already too late, as Leclerc was already on his way to his pit crew.

Lammers says at the NOS Formula 1 podcast that Leclerc's race engineer did not make a big mistake: "How long did Leclerc have to wait for Sainz? One second, maybe two? That's what you're talking about. So in that one second someone has to make a split second decision. That's the first thing that's important to point out that the guy who gave that call. He's not at fault at all, zero."

Without Sainz, Leclerc wouldn't have won either

Lammers says race engineers, like drivers, work on the limit and compares Padros' call to a driver blocking a wheel. "He wasn't wrong, it was an unfortunate confluence of circumstances." According to the former F1 driver, Leclerc would have had much bigger problems if he had continued for an extra lap, as he would have had to defend against George Russell.

"He lost the race because he went from rain tires, to intermediates, to slicks. Because if Sainz was not there, he would have been third instead of first," says Lammers. The Dutchman believes Leclerc is just as guilty of the mistake as Ferrari's strategy team.
