Mol recognizes Ferrari debacle: 'Because of this they don't take championships'

Charles Leclerc lost precious points during his home race in Monaco to Max Verstappen. His team Ferrari had the biggest share in this. Olav Mol thinks that the mistake the team made is unacceptable.

After teammate Carlos Sainz was brought into the pit lane to change to 'slick' tires, Leclerc panicked over the on-board radio. The Ferrari driver was also brought in, but was later told to keep driving. At that point, Leclerc was alone inside and had given up his 'track position' (which is crucial at Monaco).

Mol and Doornbos critical of Ferrari

At the Ziggo Race Cafe, F1 commentator Mol sounds dumbfounded: "Sorry to say it, but this is why Ferrari, is Ferrari and why they don't string together world championships so easily. That panic with both he [Leclerc and engineer]. He's already panicking, so you need someone on the other side, but they're not calm either." For Red Bull Racing, the reporter has nothing but praise. Mol says that tactically the team was once again "heart-stoppingly strong" by taking victory again with lesser pace.

According to former F1 driver Robert Doornbos the blunders at Ferrari started earlier; in the cockpit of Sainz. Sainz was the only one in the top four who did not switch from the extreme wet tire to the intermediate tire, but chose to wait and go straight to the slicks. Doornbos: "It already started with Sainz saying he wanted to stretch it out to the slicks. Well, then Red Bull starts calculating. That's not so smart [that he says that himself over the board radio]."
