Carlos Sainz experienced an unfortunate weekend in Australia. The Spaniard was hoping to finish on the podium again, but instead had to drop out early in the race. According to the Madrile born, however, there was more in it, he told Speedweek.com.

Whereas his teammate Charles Leclerc started the season excellently with a first place in the world championship, Sainz could also be satisfied prior to the weekend in Australia. The driver finished in second and third place in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, proving that he too could compete for the podiums.

Sainz retains confidence in himself

He hoped to continue that line in Australia, but he failed. Leclerc started the race from pole position, while Sainz only managed to finish ninth in qualifying. Early in the race he also crashed badly, which meant he had to watch most of the race from the sidelines.

"I could have finished in the top four and without the problems on Saturday and Sunday I could have even fought for the win," Sainz commented. "Every point is important and this time we lost a lot of points. But we still have twenty races to go and now we have to make sure we deliver a perfect performance in them."
