In Melbourne, F1 drivers will have to deal withfour DRS zones for the first time. A good thing, in the opinion of Emerson Fittipaldi. The two-time world champion thinks the system is a valuable addition to the "new racing" that Formula 1 has introduced in 2022.

In conversation with VegasInsider.com Fittipaldi praised the new aerodynamic packages, as well as the role DRS played in the battle for first place between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. "In my opinion, it was a great improvement that made for a more competitive race, where the drivers were able to drive closer to each other," says the 1972 and 1974 world champion.

Fittipaldi happy with DRS

He underlines that the two rivals were driving very close to each other especially in the last few laps of the race. This was also the case in the high-speed corners, where it was not possible in recent years. "In the last few laps of the race, the tyres have already been used and they are still challenging each other," continued the Brazilian. "I like that. It's a big improvement."

A number of major changes have been made to the Albert Park circuit. For example, at the Australian Grand Prix, drivers will face no less than four DRS zones for the first time. Fittipaldi is convinced that will make for a great show. The big winner of that change? "The public," he concludes.
