Whereas Ferrari has been struggling the past two years, the Italian racing team seems to be doing well at the moment. The double victory ensures that there is again plenty of talk about possible contract extensions. Charles Leclerc's contract runs until the end of 2023, but Carlos Sainz' contract expires after 2022. If it is up to Mattia Binotto, however, this will soon change.

Sainz completed Ferrari's dream weekend by complementing Leclerc's victory with a second place, giving the team a long-awaited double victory. The F1-75 is not disappointing so far, but neither are the two drivers of it.

Ferrari and Sainz want to continue together

The Spaniard was unable to compete for victory in Bahrain, but based on his performance in 2021, he is anything but out of the running. For Ferrari, therefore, it is time to commit the driver to a contract extension soon, Binotto told Auto, Motor und Sport.

Sainz himself had been complaining all weekend about his own pace, which was not fast enough to keep up with frontrunners Leclerc and Max Verstappen. That made him all the more satisfied with second place in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Something else that can presumably satisfy him soon is the imminent contract extension: "We just need to put it on paper," said team boss Binotto.
