Strong winds had already been predicted for Thursday in Bahrain. Currently, the strength of the wind is indeed increasing in the desert where the F1 teams are preparing for the first Grand Prix of the year. Niels Wittich allows the teams to close the garages.

'In Bahrain you never know'

'With the weather you never know in Bahrain' said the CEO of the Bahrain International Circuit even at the beginning of the week. Heavy winds were predicted for Thursday. That wind will die down during the weekend, so the first race of the year will probably not be plagued by a sandstorm. Still, that's not entirely out of the question. As the CEO says, the weather is not easy to predict in Bahrain. The Formula 2 test days were also cut short last week due to an unforeseen sandstorm.

Race director Niels Wittich, who will be in action for the first time this weekend, has announced that teams have been allowed to close the garage doors on Thursday. While the teams are busy in the garages preparing for the first F1 weekend, they need not fear prying eyes and other teams coming for a peek. For safety reasons, Wittich has decided that the garage doors can be closed. This does not mean that the race management has to lay down the work. The teams continue to work behind closed doors.
