The release date for the new season of Drive to Survive has been announced. Netflix's hit series couldn't believe its luck with the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021 and is releasing another behind-the-scenes documentary about the season before the the new F1 campaign kicks off.
Drive to Survive is a success
For four seasons now, a camera crew from Netflix has been present in the Formula One paddock. What started as a series that enabled fans to look behind the scenes of the Formula 1 teams, grew into a huge hit. It was especially popular and a huge success in its first year because Ferrari and Mercedes didn't participate, giving lesser-known teams their time in the spotlight.
However, after the second and third seasons, Netflix was also repeatedly accused of looking for stories. The season's storyline was abandoned, things were mixed up for a more dramaric story, and rivalries were almost made up. For example, in the last season, an episode was devoted to the so-called rivalry between Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo.
No Verstappen
However, with the way the 2021 Formula One season panned out, Netflix won't have to have invented a storyline to achieve a good series. Hamilton and Verstappen provided the necessary action and drama in the season itself that could be made into a nice documentary in its own right. However, Netflix has one problem: Verstappen is no longer participating in the series.
The Red Bull driver has previously stated that he will no longer participate in the series because quotes from the show have been taken out of context in the past. For example, especially in the first season, the Dutchman was portrayed as the "bad-guy" as opposed the good-natured and articulate Daniel Ricciardo.
Netflix will therefore have to do Drive to Survive season 4 without quotes from the Dutchman, but even then there is enough content left for a wonderful show. During the Super Bowl, Netflix announced that the new season will be available on Netflix starting March 11, launching the series right in the middle of the second winter test in Bahrain.
