Drastic change in F1?: 'Drivers would not get anywhere near as close'

The FIA is throwing a big spanner in the works this season to increase the excitement in Formula 1. However, Mark Hughes hopes that the organization will dare to make more changes in the coming years and suggests at The Race one possibility.

Formula 1 drivers get a lot of information through their earpiece these days. Not only do the teams have various experts working on data, but also in other areas the drivers receive advice on how best to proceed. According to Hughes, the FIA would be wise to stop doing that.

He thinks it would be a good idea to give the drivers the data exclusively on their handlebars and that they then have to act themselves. "Instead of being instructed by the pitwall, they would have to make use of it themselves and make their own decisions on how to run their races," Hughes writes. "Without either the overview or detailed expertise of the pitwall, the drivers would not get anywhere near as close to the optimum way of running the race."

FIA to stick with new cars for now

For now, however, it seems unlikely that this rule will take hold any time soon. Indeed, the teams are expected to put up a lot of resistance to the reduction of their influence in the races. For the future, however, it cannot be ruled out that such a rule will still enter the sport.
