Alonso knows about 2022: the time for excuses is over

For Fernando Alonso, last season was mainly about getting to know the Alpine car and getting a surprising result at times. Beforehand, the Spaniard knew that 2021 was a transition year. Next season it should really happen.

There is hope everywhere

Alpine used last season to restructure the organisation, further streamline internal processes and design a strong car and engine for the upcoming season. Already earlier, several Alpine team members let it be known in the media that the first signs for a strong 2022 are there. "At the moment, there are only hopes," Alonso told The Race. "But I understand that these hopes are for everybody."

With a major overhaul of the regulations, it remains to be seen which teams build the best car. Many experts believe that Mercedes and Red Bull will be the teams to beat next season. Still, a surprise here and there from another team cannot be ruled out. Alpine wants to be that team and fight for victory at every Grand Prix. The preconditions are there, says Alonso.

No excuses

Moreover, the top teams no longer have an unlimited budget. The playing field is therefore virtually the same for everyone. "But there are no more [excuses that] we have less budget, or we have less resources, or they are using two wind tunnels. There are not any more of those things. So, it’s up to us", Alonso knows.
