Albert Park wants to host the Australian GP in the long term

Albert Park, the circuit where the Australian Grand Prix is held, is undergoing changes to ensure it stays on the Formula 1 calendar. More than ten million euros have been invested in track improvements.

The contract of the circuit in Melbourne runs until 2025, but the bosses of the circuit are already looking at the long term. According to Andrew Westacott, boss of the Australian GP, the improvements are meant to keep Melbourne on the calendar.

It is said that Sydney would like to take over the Grand Prix. They think they have a good chance of bringing the event to their city. There are also plenty of other countries that would like to host a race.

Race needs to be more exciting

"When you are doing the track modifications we’ve done, you don’t do those just for the three or four years we’ve got of the current contract", Westacott tells Speedcafe.com. The F1 calendar is becoming increasingly crowded with a record number of races of 23 in the upcoming season. The circuit has done everything possible to make the race in Melbourne more attractive.

"The intent of it is to make the racing more exciting, so what we did was make subtle changes. The combination to some of the parts is designed to introduce more tyre strategy, hopefully get more tyre deg with the more aggressive asphalt mix and make for more overtaking", ends Westacott.
