Emotivo homenaje de Alonso a su mentor: "Un día muy triste"
Para ganar la Triple Corona del automovilismo, tienes que ser el mejor en el Gran Premio de Mónaco, las 24 Horas de Le Mans y la Indy500. Sólo Graham Hill consiguió ganar estos tres eventos. Fernando Alonso lleva dos, faltándole sólo la Indy500 (todavía). En 2017, el español lideró 27 vueltas en el Indianapolis Speedway antes de que su motor Honda fallara.
La gran actuación de Alonso en la famosa carrera se debió en parte a Gil de Ferran, fallecido el viernes. Por ello, en la X, Alonso rindió un emotivo homenaje al brasileño, que ganó él mismo la Indy500 (en 2003): "No tengo palabras. Es un día muy triste. Gracias por los momentos que compartimos, por enseñarme de todo corazón a correr en óvalos y por los innumerables recuerdos que creamos juntos. Te echaremos de menos Gil".

Mientras tanto, cada vez más equipos de F1 reaccionan a la muerte de De Ferran, colega de McLaren. Mientras que Williams, Haas, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Sauber y Mercedes ya han expresado sus condolencias, aún faltan las muestras de apoyo de Red Bull Racing, AlphaTauri y Alpine.
