Max Verstappen would have loved to race on the wet track of Spa-Francorchamps, but after the podium ceremony, he also has to admit that in this situation it could have been very dangerous. The Red Bull Racing driver is therefore satisfied with the victory and the fact that he has gained some points on Lewis Hamilton.

"Of course I would have liked to have raced for it," Verstappen acknowledged to Sky Sports ' camera. "I'm confident we could've done a good job. It's easy to say we could've won the race, but it's also easy to go off the track in the conditions we have now so I take it.

Not the prettiest way

The victory has seen the 23-year-old Limburger move five points closer to rival Hamilton in the World Championship standings. Half points were handed out on Sunday. "That's how the rules are written. They always want a result," said Verstappen, agreeing that there was no more driving possible. "It's not the nicest way of getting the result. But it's impossible with the weather. If someone would go off at Eau Rouge you could just be T boned. Extremely low grip and the weather didn't improve."

That the current number two in the championship excelled on Saturday was good timing in retrospect. "It proved to be very important, a long season and a lot of races to go though. We gain 5 points, but it's a shame. I love coming here, it's a great track. The real winners are the fans, it must be horrible to sit in those conditions," Verstappen concluded.
