The crash of Max Verstappen at Silverstone and the consequences for him and the team are well known by now. Verstappen is already on his third engine and has to take a grid penalty at the next engine change.

Doornbos says during F1 Cafe that he thinks the rules need to be changed. The rules are just not fair at the moment.

"It's a crooked rule. You are already punished because you are thrown out, then it turns out that there is so much damage that you can't repair the engine. And then you are already on your third engine. With twelve races to go you will never make it, so you have to take a penalty without it being your own fault. That's tough. Monza could be a circuit where you can take the penalty."

Rules must be changed

Doornbos believes that such a crash should not affect the team affected in three ways. "In any case, I think you should do something about it. If it's clear that you're going to be thrown off by someone else, that this doesn't come out of your own budget again." Tom Coronel, also present during F1 Cafe, supports Doornbos.

"Three times you get punished. Replacing the engine, then the money you have to spend on development and the result that is gone. That's too much." Whether there will be a change to the rule remains to be seen.
