Ferrari president: 'Our drivers are not used to winning yet'

Despite Charles Leclerc's retirement on the opening lap at the Hungaroring, it was still an excellent weekend for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz took a podium finish from Sebastian Vettel's disqualification and Ferrari moved up to third in the championship.

Not used to winning

With Leclerc and Sainz, Ferrari is slowly but surely crawling out of their slump from last year. In 2020, the team finished only sixth in the championship, its worst result since 1980. The last championships were won in 2007 and 2008, so the Italians are desperate for new success. Moreover, 2007 also saw the last driver's championship won by Kimi Raikkonen.

Ferrari president John Elkann has told us Speedweek.com expressed his happiness with the young driver duo at Ferrari. "I am optimistic because we have two young drivers who are not yet used to winning, but with their determination and modesty they are ready to train themselves to win." So far, the Ferrari drivers have been on the podium three times. Twice with Sainz, once with Leclerc. At Silverstone, Leclerc was close to a win until he was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton a few laps before the finish.

Battle for third place

This season Ferrari is fighting an exciting battle with McLaren for third place in the championship. After Hungary both teams are on 163 points, so after the summer break it will be very exciting. It won't be down to Leclerc and Sainz, Elkann believes. "They have given the whole race team new energy. How good is that after our disappointments! They are young and enthusiastic. I see a race team that is more prepared than ever to return to the top."
