It was a day to forget for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. The strategy in Monaco wasn't well thought out, leaving the reigning world champion stuck in seventh place. But according to Jan Lammers it wasn't just the team's fault.

Bad day for Hamilton

"Hamilton didn't get everything out of it either," Lammers said at the NOS F1 podcast. "You saw at one point that Perez was putting pressure on Sainz, but at a certain point you saw that it was pointless, because you don't get past them. But Hamilton was still halfway through the race." Lammers is surprised by the fact that at no point did Hamilton really make an attack on the cars in front of him.

"He wasn't sharp. He tried to do a fastest lap on the new tyres for a while, but he just wasn't on it consistently," Lammers continued. The former F1 driver thinks Hamilton expected Pierre Gasly to pass him. But instead he was stuck behind the Frenchman for the entire race.

No excuses from Hamilton

After the Grand Prix Hamilton was unhappy with the way his team performed. The strategy was not good, so he could not do anything during the race. Although Lammers thinks otherwise.

"Normally, when he has won and is successful, he thanks everyone. But he should be apologising to all the people at home now. He missed out in qualifying. But all those practice sessions before that Bottas was faster or just as fast. He just wasn't strong. It's quite okay to pull that on yourself."
