Binotto concerned after Leclerc's crash: "We are worried and checking"

Mattia Binotto reports concern from the Ferrari garage after Charles Leclerc crashed in the final run of Q3. Leclerc had set the fastest time when the red flag dropped and therefore secured pole position. However, Leclerc's gearbox might need to be changed. If so, Leclerc will take a five-place grid drop.

Ferrari's pole position in Monaco is the Italian's first P1 on a Saturday since Mexico 2019. But there remains some doubt. Binotto explains the situation in the Ferrari garage as the team make checks.

"It's true, we are worried but we are checking. It's too early too early to know so let's leave the mechanics and the engineers to check the gearbox itself and we'll see in the next few hours," Binotto told Sky Sports.

Unexpected

On Thursday, Ferrari raised a few eyebrows by finishing FP2 fastest and second fastest. Despite this, Binotto admits it's still a surprise for the team to be on pole position.

"Being on pole was not expected but after Thursday we were happy with the car performance and the drivers' confidence. It's good to see Sainz so fast and becoming more and more confident with the car. He knows that he could have done better today and he is a bit disappointed but that's good," Binotto added.

However, the Ferrari boss believes it will be difficult to win the race. "I think it will be difficult to win. We're in a good position, the pitstop will be key and Max is very fast who will give us a hard time as will other cars behind," he concluded.
