Berger: 'We hope that he will continue at the point where his father left off'

Mick Schumacher covered the necessary kilometres during the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, which is, of course, part of his preparation for the 2021 season. He will then compete with Nikita Mazepin for Haas. The expectations around Mick Schumacher are high and Gerhard Berger warns that Mick should not be pushed in the footsteps of his father.

A road of his own for Mick Schumacher

Mick's surname undoubtedly helped him a lot on his way to Formula 1, but in the end, what he shows is what counts. The surname may be so legendary, but performance is what matters, and Gerhard Berger states on Austrian ServusTV that Mick Schumacher has plenty of potential, but he must go his own way.

"He has finished one championship after another in a Schumacher style. If he didn't win it, he tried again to get the focus on it. I think he has the Schumacher genes and he will find his way into Formula 1." But again, you shouldn't have too high expectations.

"You can't force him into Michael's footsteps. I'm sure he's a good driver, but we'll see how far he gets in the end." 2021 is not expected to be very special in the sense of what Schumacher can show. After all, this year Haas has only scored three points and next year the cars will be largely the same.

However, Berger does hope that Mick Schumacher will do well, partly because of what happened to his father. "The suffering and bad luck that has happened is still so much in our bones that we say: the only thing we can really hope for Michael is for his son to continue where he left off."
