Pirelli insists on rule change: ''The teams are very flexible in that''

Formula 1 seems to start at the beginning of July at the circuit in Austria, but due to the coronavirus it is of course not completely certain. However, this brings some worries for Pirelli.

With several races in a row, the Italian tyre supplier has to produce a huge amount of tyres in a much shorter period of time. Pirelli therefore prefers that teams are offered a standardized quantity of tyres per race weekend, where the teams are normally allowed to choose the quantity of tyres per weekend.

Standard tyre choices

''We start in Europe, but soon we go to Asia and America, which means we have to make about 35,000 tyres, which normally takes us a year. However, we are talking to the teams and they are very flexible. For example, they are open to letting us make the tyre choices," Mario Isola said to Autosport.com.

Pirelli will then choose thirteen tyres, spread over the three compounds per circuit. Normally Pirelli will have to notify the teams fourteen weeks in advance, but there too you need to be a little more flexible. However, Isola doesn't rule out that the teams can still make their own choices.

No strategic problem

"It's feasible and I don't see a problem with it, but the important thing is that we get the information in time. Standard tyre choices wouldn't be a strategic problem either, because in the free practice sessions everyone can still take a route with the tyres they use there'', says Isola.

In the end, it's all about the start of the season and everyone has to adapt a little for that, says Isola. ''Everyone needs to be a little more flexible this year. Of course you have to stick to certain guidelines, but in some cases we need quick decisions now, so the season can start quickly'', concludes Isola.
