Many followers of Formula 1 believe Lewis Hamilton is able to at least match Michael Schumacher's record. A record that not so long ago was seen as unattainable, but as is the case with the 'impossible' it turns out to be achievable as soon as a new legend emerges and comes close. Hamilton is near

First world title Hamilton

The Briton won his first world title in 2008 for McLaren by securing fifth place in the race at the very last corner of that season. He outsmarted Timo Glock, we all remember. It was one of the most exciting climbs in the history of Formula 1. With this fifth place he was just ahead of Felipe Massa, who was already celebrating his title.

It was only the third season of the Brit in the King's class that left a great impression in the previous two years because as a rookie he kept pace with Fernando Alonso. At that time the Spaniard was seen as the best driver after the Schumacher era.

Next world title

Yet it took much longer than expected before Hamilton once again became world champion. By Niki Laude Hamilton started working for Mercedes who would dominate the hybrid era shortly afterwards. As a result of this changeover, the Brit now stands at six world titles. Only one championship away from Schumacher.

Hamilton is not doing that. In an interview with F1 racing, the Mercedes driver talks about his possible record-breaking hunt that lies ahead. Please note that this interview was conducted when the world still thought we were on the eve of a new regular Formula 1 season.

"I've always said that Michael Schumacher's record has never been a goal for me. I'm just someone who doesn't think about records or anything like that. Besides, I thought that getting close to Schumacher was impossible. After my first world title, it took a long time before I got my second, so the record was very far away. Now it seems close but also so far away that I still can't grasp it".

Let's hope there will be another season, albeit shortened, so Hamilton can attack the record. Who knows, Max Verstappen may be able to stop him from doing that.
