Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes that Valtteri Bottas' win is redemption for his 2018 misfortunes. The Finn held off teammate Lewis Hamilton under serious pressure to retake the championship lead.

Last season it was the Mercedes of Hamilton who tasted victory after an incredible series of events resulted in Bottas running over a piece of unrecovered debris, puncturing his tyre and forcing him to retire from the race just three laps from the chequered flag.

There were no doubts over the Finn's absolute determination to make amends, stealing pole away in the final moments of qualifying and denying Hamilton the win in the closing stages under great pressure.

"It's certainly redemption for him. There was debris again, but redemption for him certainly," Wolff told media after the race.

"We just told them to take it easy at the beginning because we didn't know how the mediums would last. At the end they were free to go, yeah. It got a bit racy at the end which is good also.

"Both of them are really good under pressure. You can see, neither of them made a mistake. I hope they can maintain that to the end of the season."

Bottas' win puts him back in the lead of the driver's championship by a single point over his teammate ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in two-weeks time.
