F1 finally drops downtown Miami street race plans

Liberty Media's plans to hold a race on the streets of Miami have taken a huge hit after plans to hold the event in downtown Miami were scrapped earlier this week.

The new owners of Formula 1 had been pushing hard for an additional race in the United States, with a street race in Miami a top priority for a potential slot on the F1 calendar.

However, plans for the race have been blocked by the local community leaving Liberty with another failed attempt of F1 in Miami and with a search for an alternative venue.

Fresh plans appear to be in the making however, with a race around the NFL's Miami Dolphins stadium a new possibility in the search for an area to hold the event.

“We want to do something great for Miami,” vice chairman and CEO of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, Tom Garfinkel, explained to the Miami Herald.

“Unfortunately when we finally received the detailed report of what it would take to build out a street circuit each year, the multiple weeks of traffic and construction disruption to the port, Bayfront Park and the residents and businesses on Biscayne Boulevard would have been significant.

"A lot would have to happen for us to be able to do it. But we have over 250 acres of land so adding an F1 race to where Hard Rock Stadium and the Miami Open sit means we can create a world-class racing circuit that is unencumbered by existing infrastructure.”
