Piastri agrees with Horner about McLaren chances fighting Red Bull

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes McLaren and Ferrari are threats for his team in the championship standings, something which McLaren driver Oscar Piastri agrees with. The Australian responded to the current fight at the top, and believes McLaren are truly a part of it.

"It'll be tough [to fight Red Bull and Ferrari], definitely. But I think we're in the fight. You know, I think we scored the most points this weekend as a team. Not quite much. But it's definitely a really good result for us," Piastri reacted to Christian Horner's words to GPblog and others. In Canada, with Lando Norris' second place and Piastri's P5, the British team scored 28 points compared to Max Verstappen's 25 and Ferrari's 0 points.

"I think we've been very consistent in the last few weekends, and I think across some very different circuits we've been strong at all of them. Still, some things to tidy up, and we're talking about little things. But when you're fighting for the championship little things go a long way. So it's going to be very tough," Piastri explained why McLaren do have a chance, but still underlined the difficulty of the challenge.

Piastri believes now it's down to them to really challenge for the top spot, as they are currently third in the constructors' championships. "Obviously Red Bull's got a bit of a head start. I don't know how far behind Ferrari we are now. But obviously, we got a good bunch of points out of them today. So I definitely think we're in the mix. But it'll be a big second half of the year to make it happen."

Red Bull currently lead the standings with 301 points. Ferrari, without scoring any points in Canada, stand with 252 points. Finally, McLaren are currently third with scoring 212 points through nine Grands Prix in 2024.
