Fernando Alonso still does not know where his future lies. Will it be a longer stay in Formula 1, a move to another racing class or retirement? The 42-year-old Spaniard is going to make a decision somewhere in the coming months. Speaking to Sky Sports after the Japan Grand Prix, he briefly dropped a possible switch to Mercedes.

As we know, Mercedes is looking for a replacement for Lewis Hamilton. Several names have passed by in recent weeks: Max Verstappen, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz and also Sebastian Vettel. Recently, Toto Wolff indicated that Alonso could also possibly be considered as George Russell's new teammate in 2025.

In Japan, the Aston Martin driver beat both Mercedes drivers by crossing the line in sixth place. Russell finished seventh, with Hamilton finishing on P9. Asked by Sky Sports if he plans to just give Wolff a call after the race at Suzuka, Alonso replied, “That’s a very good question. But yes, Mercedes is behind now, so it doesn’t feel that attractive!"

Alonso's future

After the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, Alonso backtracked on earlier words that he would make a decision within"a few weeks" on whether or not to continue in Formula 1. A few weeks have now become a few months.

Even after the Japanese GP, there is still not much more clarity. "It goes either way. I had a lot of fun, which is great to keep on racing. I had one of my best weekends ever in driving, [but] I am 44 seconds behind the leader, so it doesn’t feel that attractive at the same time, so let’s see.”
