Viaplay is in financial dire straits. On the stock exchange, the company is falling in value and, as a result, the publication of its quarterly figures has been postponed to the end of November. The Scandinavian streaming service is also said to have offered broadcast rights for Formula 1, among others, to RTL and Ziggo for sale, reports BNR. Sports marketer Chris Woerts explains Viaplay's situation.

Since the streaming service started operating in the Netherlands, its stock market value has plummeted considerably. Woerts explains why. " Viaplay bought the expensive sports rights and invested heavily in studio facilities, but the high costs can no longer be met by the number of subscribers," he tells BNR.

Why doesn't Viaplay have money?

The Scandinavian company would not be able to raise money in the short term by selling sports broadcasting rights. Potentially interested parties would find them too expensive. "Viaplay has to come to an agreement with the current shareholders of a capital injection, otherwise it will be the end of the matter. Viaplay therefore needs more money and they need to restructure their debts and consult with the bank. The water is at their lips," Woerts informed.

Things may not be going very well for Viaplay, but looking at the Dutch branch, there is some nuance to that. Indeed, Woerts previously told GPblog that the Dutch figures were actually quite positive.
