Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has spoken out after the Italian Grand Prix. The Austrian stood up for star driver Lewis Hamilton, who was penalised by race control after a fight with Oscar Piastri. According to Wolff, the Briton might be the only driver who would admit his mistake, he told Mirror.co.uk.

The seven-time world champion hit Piastri's McLaren just before the second chicane. The Australian suffered floor damage and had to replace his front wing after Hamilton's tap. The Briton was able to continue driving himself and, despite a five-second time penalty, captured sixth place. Hamilton admitted his mistake cavalierly afterwards and apologised to the McLaren rookie.

'Hamilton only one who would admit'

His team boss, Wolff, has a high opinion of Hamilton's morality. "Five seconds is what the menu says. It was Lewis's mistake. He is always very sporting when it comes to things like this," the team boss stated. "He's very sportsmanlike with these things. He is the only one that I see out there admitting he got this wrong. I think that kind of sportsmanship is what you need to admire with him. Pretty much everyone [else] is always complaining and moaning, just to try to not get a penalty."
