Fernando Alonso made optimistic claims in the run up towards the Canadian Grand Prix, and wants to return to the podium, after the two Aston Martin cars finished in P6 and P7 respectively in Barcelona. The British racing stable has brought new upgrades to be competitive in the team's owner's home race.

Alonso is looking forward to trying out his new updates in Montreal, following a rather disappointing weekend in Spain, getting only six points on home turf.

"Hopefully, we can be a little bit more competitive than Barcelona,” he started in F1's Thursday press conference. “You never know until you hit the track. We also had expectations in Barcelona and we didn't perform in that race. So, yeah, let's see. We have a couple of new parts in the car as well in this race. So depending on the weather, we will try to test them and validate them.”

The Sparniard also believes in the package Aston Martin is constantly improving, and hopes they are on the right track in terms of developing the car. "Our car has been a completely new project for Aston Martin, a completely new philosophy, a new concept of how the car works.”

He continued: "We've been discovering things on every race this year. And I think it's an optimisation of the package, what we tried to do. And we've been constantly bringing new parts to the races. This is another step forward, and more to come in the future.”

Aggressive in owner’s home race

Alonso’s teammate and owner, the Stroll family will have its home race weekend of course in Canada. The former two-time champion was asked about Stroll Sr’s high hopes in Montreal. “You never know, but it is an aggressive target (having both cars on the podium) for the weekend. But we know Lawrence the ambition of him is super high always. And we will try to make him happy and proud in the home Grand Prix.”
