The Belgian Grand Prix is under a lot of pressure. According to many rumours, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit would disappear from the calendar with the return of the South African Grand Prix. However, Motorsport.com now reports that the addition of an African Grand Prix is going to take a little longer.

Indeed, plans for a race at the Kyalami circuit are said to have been moved up a year, where initially there was just talk of a 2024 return. Formula 1 does not want to go ahead with potentially unhealthy plans that could see the race disappear from the calendar even before the contract expires.

'Spa stays on calendar longer'

This opens the doors for the Belgian Grand Prix. This would see the race held at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit for an extra year. The contract between Formula 1 and the circuit would then be extended by one year. This would mean another year of riding through the hills of the Ardennes.

Update | Confirmation: 2024 South African GP cancelled

A spokesperson for the Kyalami circuit has now clarified the fate of the South African Grand Prix. Speaking to News24, he confirmed that the Formula 1 circus will indeed not travel to the 4.5-kilometre circuit next year: "We are aware of the fact that a 2024 Grand Prix at Kyalami is not going ahead. However, we cannot offer insights as to the reason for this decision."
