Lowe: Awarding points to all 20 cars "would be good"

Williams technical chief Paddy Lowe has suggested that the F1 should have a system where all 20 cars should be awarded points after each race, as he thinks it will increase things significantly at the back of the field.

The Grove-based team has struggled massively this season, dropping down to dead-last after four straight seasons of finishing within the top five in the constructors' championship.

Maybe it's not a surprise that Lowe, who is largely responsible for this year's FW41 car from Williams, argues that a points system where all finishing cars are awarded points would be a good idea.

The FOM floated the idea at an earlier stage, and while reactions were largely positive, there has been no concrete action taken to make the idea a reality. Still, it could be implemented with the new set of regulations in 2021.

"It does actually bring to mind this suggestion that FOM have made to change the points table," Lowe told Motorsport.

"I think with the sport has developed now, the points system feels a little bit lopsided.

"Points for the top 15 or all 20 would be good."

Lowe argues that this system would be fairer for more struggling teams like Williams, who don't perform well but do always manage to get both cars over the finish line.

"One of the things we've achieved this year is we've actually got two cars home much more reliably than many of our competitors, and got not reward for it.

"For the team, the guys that work all the long hours, whether the car is quick or slow, they just have to make sure it doesn't break down - and they get nothing for it.

"It's a tough job and these points of encouragement can do wonders for people's motivation."
