Max Verstappen had to fight for it until the very last lap, but the Dutchman has won the Australian Grand Prix for the first time. Afterwards, the Red Bull Racing driver was therefore very satisfied.

It was an eventful Grand Prix for everyone, including Verstappen. The Dutchman got off lousy at the first start and failed to recover in the starts that followed. Still, Verstappen regained the lead. With his huge top speed, he flew past Hamilton and seemed to be on his way to an easy win. However, things got exciting in the closing stages with several restarts.

Verstappen wins in Melbourne

''No, we had a very poor start. Lap one I was careful, because I had a lot to lose and they had a lot to win. The pace of the car was quick, you could see that straight away. We were always there waiting for DRS for the chance to pass,'' said Verstappen after the race.

Things got exciting in the closing stages with the red flags and restarts, which Verstappen doesn't quite understand. ''With these red flags... That first one you can do, but that second one I don't understand. It was a mess. But we had good pace and we won. That was the most important thing.''

Verstappen is also asked by David Coulthard about the duel on the first lap with Lewis Hamilton. ''For my side, I tried to avoid contact. It's quite clear in the ruels what you can do on the outside, but that is clearly not being followed. That's okay, we had good pace and we pass them anyway.''

Verstappen also had a moment in the grass and can laugh about it afterwards. ''I did the city favour by cutting the grass, they don't have to do that now,'' Verstappen laughed. ''It's great to win here,' ' the Dutchman concluded.
