Red Bull's plans for Dan Ticktum to test for the team have been left in ruins after the FIA denied the F3 driver the opportunity to take part in the post-Hungary test. Due to serving a ban in 2016, Ticktum lacks the required superlicense points to test for the F1 team.

The team described the decision as "odd" with Christian Horner telling Autosport that the FIA have allowed drivers with less pedigree to take part in tests in the past.

"I think it's slightly odd that you've got a driver that's won Macau and been winning races in Formula 3 this year but can't drive at a young driver test. That needs looking at.

"I think it's something the FIA are considering, when there are drivers who have arguably achieved less that are able to compete."

Even if Ticktum were to win the European F3 title this season, he would still be 10 points short of qualifying for an F1 superlicense but it would mean he would qualify for an International A license, enabling him to take part in F1 tests and practice sessions.

In light of the decision, Horner reaffirmed that the young Brit's goal was now solely to win the F3 championship.

"Dan's priority and focus is to try and win that Formula 3 championship, which he's got a great opportunity to do this year.

"He's an extremely quick driver, he's not in the lead team, and I think he's rebounded extremely well and learnt some life lessons following his difficulties in Formula 4 and the subsequent ban."
